DISSIDENTS FINDING THE GARDEN OF EDEN [SOLD]2023, 80 cm x 120 cm, oil on canvas
The work is inspired by biblical depictions and ideology applied into modern constructs. A figural composition along with a paysage based on the concept of The Garden of Eden depicts the return of selected individuals to the ethereal gardens. With recent seemingly never-ending political, economic, and social disputes, a yearning for a safe space, a desire to break free from the system poured into the shown work. Whether it is the same woman at different stages of her life, or several different women, is up for the viewer to decide. The forms are taken out of the present day disarray, and given the chance to find enlightenment, liberated and unbound by fear or concern, if they wish to.
LIFE & DEATH
2021, 160 cm x 140 cm, oil on canvas
Following a period of time during which loss seemed like a leading emotion, this painting derives elements from Klimt’s well-known canvas, Death and Life, through a personal lens. The Lady - a visualization of the Grim Reaper’s opposite, the other gatekeeper, ‘life’, has her hand over the begging mortals beneath her in dismissive arrogance. A lamb patiently waits alongside The Lady, serving as a false signifier of innocence and purity. Behind the mortals, the old, the young, the damned, the loved, the rich, the poor, Death fiddles with its hands, glancing at The Lady, unsure of how to proceed. The clock in the foreground reminds the audience that time truly waits for no one. The work explores why death when assigned a character is so feared, even though it is the only guide people have in the transition to the afterlife according to varying cultures. The indexical sign for life that circles in folklore, if anything, is the more mercyless gatekeeper.
